Guest Author Shari Olsen - Service Volunteer A few years ago, my dear husband learned of a small village in Tanzania from a friend, Steve Whitehouse. The village, called Kogaja, had mud and stick dwellings, no access to clean water, electricity, or formal education. But what it did have was a resilient community and the beautiful children full of potential. He was given an opportunity to financially help dig a well for the area. The well now provides clean, pure water without charge. Though carrying the water to dwellings requires much effort, it is available and a blessing to the village.
But water was just the beginning.
A bold vision followed—to build a school of hope for the children of Kogaja. What once seemed like an impossible dream is now a shining reality: the most beautiful building in the region, perched above a valley of fertile crops. Inside are the sounds of learning, laughter, and life. It is a place where futures are being reshaped every day.
As a major part of the service expedition, we had the privilege of delivering school supplies and sports equipment. These simple items brought enormous joy to the children. We sang, played, danced, and shared moments that will stay with us forever. The children’s light and the teachers’ dedication inspired us deeply. It was a highlight in all of our lives to play with the children, laugh and sing with them, and love them.
Africompassion is led by a determined, positive human, Jerald Malamba. He and Steve Whitehouse have a wonderful vision of what can be in that area of Tanzania and they are working tirelessly to make it happen. None of this would be possible without the donors and sponsors to Africompassion, who are unlocking potential and igniting dreams.

For the past few weeks, I have been privileged to work alongside Jerald, Steve and seven other service volunteers to get to know the dear residents of Kogaja and experience their great love.
Our time with the children and determined teachers of the new school was glorious and is proof that hope in action transforms lives.
